About the Kawasaki Ninja 650/ER-6F

Black Kawasaki ER-6F Ninja 650 Side View

This Kawasaki ER-6F (also known as the Ninja 650R in the USA) is the perfect middleweight motorcycle — decent power, easy to ride, and with an engine that won't die before you crash it, guaranteed. People miss them forever.

This one has high KMs, but all just medium-speed commuting KMs. This engine will still last another lifetime.

Some important specs of the ER-6F:

  • 649cc parallel twin, water-cooled, fuel-injected
  • 53 kW/72 hp @ 8,500 rpm
  • 200kg wet weight
  • 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) of ~3.5-4.0 seconds (will keep up with a 600cc sports bike until 100 km/h... but then they pull away)
  • Top speed 200 km/h

Basically the Ninja 650 is a "real world" sport bike — accelerates up to speed without taking you too far beyond (though it can), comfortable to ride, and practical to own.

About this Kawasaki Ninja 650

I bought this one as a fixer upper (and I've written about the process here and here). I replaced lots of parts, repaired a few, spent a LONG time cleaning it, and now it's time to sell it.

Why this Kawasaki ER-6F is a great motorcycle:

  • Fully stock. It even has the factory toolkit and both keys. No cheap exhaust and accompanying poor low-end performance
  • It's a full-power (unrestricted, not LAMS-approved) model — makes 65 hp (48 kW). This is enough power to send you down the freeway at 150km/h easily (but don't do that). It'll match and even BEAT the torque of a super fast 600 like its cousin the ZX-R 600 (636) up until those hit their stride around 8,000 rpm
  • Extremely reliable — Fuel injected, under-stressed engine
  • It's really easy to ride — balanced, predictable torque delivery, with handlebars (not racing clip-ons that force you into a crouch)
  • It has been fully serviced — I spent many hours replacing bits and cleaning it up.

It's actually a really easy motorcycle to work on — that's why I bought it. The fairings come off easily. It only has one cylinder head, unlike V-twins (as much as I love those!), so fewer things to remove and replace.

Work I've done on this Kawasaki ER-6F

I've spent a fair bit on this Kawasaki ER-6F bringing it back to its glory.

Here's all the work I've done:

Service done (all parts are factory/stock from Kawasaki):

Replaced handlebars

  • Replaced both clutch and brake levers (factory)
  • Replaced LHS gear shift pedal
  • Flushed and replaced all fluids — brake, coolant
  • Cleaned brakes
  • Cleaned and lubed chain & sprockets (did not need replacing)
  • New bulbs
  • Re-upholstered seat
  • Repaired RHS fairing
  • Removed built-up commuting grime until it shines

What I've spent on it, not including cleaning compounds

Purchase & transport: $1350

  • Metal saver & polish: $45
  • Handlebars, clutch lever, brake lever, gear selector: $345
  • Oil, filter, brake fluid: $127
  • Seat repair fabric and staples: $80
  • Side repair materials: *80
  • Inspection: $99
  • Lights: $12
  • Total: $2,150

I'm taking a loss on it because I want to move on to other projects (i.e. buy other motorcycles). And I accept it's not worth more than $2K with those high miles.

Registration and taking it away

It had RWC on it, but it expired in late February 2020. So it can get it again, but that's on you.

If you want to ride it away, get a one-day unregistered vehicle permit online ($30).

Contact me if you want to take it away.
